ADVANTAGE SIPs are engineered, load-carrying, timber-based panel products that can be used in walls and roofs of residential and light commercial buildings. These lightweight panels combine the structural and thermal envelope of the building; they are manufactured offsite in a factory and shipped to the construction site offering advantages to the build programme. This panelised form of construction allows SIPs to be assembled to form highly airtight, energy-efficient building envelopes. SIPs (structural insulated panels) are pre-insulated, storey-height panels that can form part of a building or whole buildings. The panels are made of either cement particle board (CPB) or, more commonly for self build, engineered wood-based sheets known as oriented strand boards (OSB). Two sheets of this are sandwiched together with a rigid insulation (such as polyurethane). SIPs have thermal and sound-insulation properties that comply with, or often significantly exceed, current Building Regulations and some incorporate a vapour-controlling membrane.
